Planet Fitness to open in Tiffin

Tiffin fitness enthusiasts and amateurs alike are to have another option for a gym in early 2019.

According to a Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. release, a franchise of the national fitness chain Planet Fitness has signed a lease to locate in Tiffin Mall.

The release states the gym will be located in the former Dollar General and Label Shopper spaces.

Franchise owner Mark Christie states in the release he has looked forward to moving a franchise to Tiffin for 2-3 years.

“We are very excited to come to the Tiffin market and provide a low-price, high-value option for community members to get into fitness,” Christie, who would have eight Planet Fitness facilities, states.

The business is to be open 24 hours a day, staffed at all times and provide free personal fitness training. Planet Fitness, which was founded in Dover, N.H., is known for creating a judgment-free zone, the release states.

The 16,000-square-foot facility is to feature 70 new pieces of cardio and strength equipment, a lobby, locker rooms and showers.

A standard membership costs $10 monthly, but the Planet Fitness Black Card Plan, at $21.99 monthly, provides additional perks such as tanning, red light therapy, hydromassage, massage chairs, use of any Planet Fitness facilities and guest passes.

The company has about 10.6 million members in more than 1,500 locations across the country.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz said the announcement was another positive development in the improvement of the mall.

“This is the fourth announcement for the Tiffin Mall site since it was purchased nearly two years ago (by Key Hotel and Property Management),” he said. “Things are not slowing down. I am pleased to welcome Planet Fitness and look forward to continued development in our commercial corridor.”

SIEDC Development Coordinator Bryce Riggs was pleased to see another national business locating in Tiffin.

“It’s something that when we’re out and about, residents and community members have expressed interest in a 24/7 (workout) facility,” he said. “Planet Fitness is a high-quality organization. This is a win-win situation.”
