Firefighters’ Sportsman’s Raffle March 3 makes money for charity
Tiffin Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters Local 322’s third annual Sportsman’s Raffle is to be 6-10 p.m. March 3 at Camden Falls Reception and Conference Center, 2460 SR 231.
President Chad Everhart of Tiffin Firefighters IAFF Local 322 said while the organization does many fundraisers, the Sportsman’s Raffle is the biggest one. Local 322 has given back to the community in many ways over the years, he said.
“A teacher at Noble Elementary School was looking for funds to buy Chromebooks for each of her students and we were actually able to fund the whole thing and were able to buy her whole class Chromebooks,” Everhart said. “We actually worked with a local business and were able to get a great deal (so they had them) for this school year.”
In 2017, the union helped fund a Boy Scout Eagle Project at Scheckelhoff Park, and this year it was able to provide Discovery Woods Preschool with about one-third of the funds needed to expand its outdoor learning classroom, he said.
Everhart said every year the group also sponsors a toy project in December to raise funds and buy toys for Tiffin kids in need, sponsors “Fill the Boot,” which raises money for Muscular Dystrophy Association and sells pink T-shirts in October to benefit Financial Assistance for Cancer Treatment.
He said Local 322 has fundraisers because personnel typically see people at some of the worst moments of their lives and has come to realize that some may still need their assistance afterwards. There are many families and individuals in the community who have various needs without an avenue to seek help as well as businesses and people in the community who want to help, but may not know the best way to do that, Everhart said.
“We have the means to make that happen with money raised by their donations and by these fundraisers,” he said. “We are fortunate to serve a great community who support us and our work, and this is a way for us to give back to them.”
While Local 322 has a fundraiser committee of four people that works to orchestrate their events, he said the union as a whole comes together to make it all happen.
“It’s just one other avenue for us to assist and help the community; not just individual people, but schools, businesses and other places,” Everhart said.
Since 2016, Local 322 has given more than $35,000 to the community in one way or another, he said.
Whether by providing funds to make events happen or through donations for door prizes and raffles, Everhart said, “We would not be able to do all we do without the help and support of local businesses and private donors.”
The Sportsman’s Raffle is to include a cash bar, appetizers, meat boards, raffles for prizes and door prizes, he said.
Everhart said money raised will be used to benefit Local 322 and its charities. Tickets can be purchased for $10 pre-sale or at the door. One pre-sale ticket is to be drawn Saturday.
