Sentinel named to top-50 list

Sentinel Career and Technology Center has been named one of the top 50 hospitality programs in the nation.

Sentinel was named to the 2018 Elite 50, which recognizes high schools and career and technical centers. Schools named to the list set the standard for secondary school training in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and/or hospitality management, according to a release from National Center for Hospitality Studies at Sullivan University in Louisville, Kentucky. The programs also are marked by strong enrollment and a dedication to community outreach.

This year’s Elite 50 programs, including Sentinel, have won state and national competitions for ProStart, SkillsUSA and Family Career and Community Leaders of America.

“The Culinary Arts & Hospitality management program has been recognized for its commitment to success in students achieving industry credentials, best practices, and for the amount of interaction and involvement our program students have in the community,” said Valerie Zeno, instructor of Sentinel’s hospitality management program. “Every student in our program commits to 200 hours outside of the school day to work on internship hours or to volunteer in the communities where we live.”

The National Center for Hospitality Studies oversees selection for the Elite 50 list. More than 350 schools designated as Hospitality Programs of Distinction applied for the list.

Criteria included an original recipe with photos or a restaurant management design and instructor educational/certification background and informational materials such as videos or brochures about the school’s program.

Further consideration was given to schools that operate a restaurant or catering service as part of their culinary and hospitality training. Sentinel operates its own cafe open to the community.
