Park board OKs new staff positions
Seneca County Park District’s board approved staff positions for a business manager and a nature preserves manager during its meeting Tuesday, according to Executive Director Sarah Betts.
The board also approved a job description for the volunteer board member spot to be vacated by Roy Zinn Dec. 31.
The two staff positions are the first to be approved since Betts was hired in April. She and Interim Programs Director Linda Rose are the district’s only current employees.
Betts said the two positions combine several jobs usually found on the staffs of larger park districts and are based on the amount of work to be done right now.
“The quantity of work will grow and we may add positions in the future,” she said.
The business manager position is part time with the person working about 1,200 hours per year. The starting pay range is $14-$18 per hour, depending on qualifications. Responsibilities include aspects of organizational accounting, payroll, marketing, record keeping and archiving, day-to-day office operation and grant writing.
A minimum of an associate’s degree is required. Candidates also must have experience in general office procedures, knowledge of word processing, proficiency in Word and Excel, and excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
The nature preserves manager is a full-time, salaried (exempt) employee. The pay range is $18-$22 per hour, depending on qualifications. Responsibilities include aspects of land and wildlife management planning and implementation, operational planning and implementation, workplace safety oversight, project oversight, equipment operation and similar duties.
An associate’s or bachelor’s degree is required plus five years of experience in natural resource management, park maintenance or construction and training. Experience in a supervisory role is required. He or she also must have knowledge and experience in desktop publishing, word processing and general computer functions, and be eligible to be certified and able to maintain all certifications for the job upon employment.

Also Tuesday, Betts said the park district is working on remodeling and lease details for office space at 3362 S. TR 151, which is within the Seneca County Jobs & Family Services building. The lease is pending approval by the SCPD board and county commissioners.
The board’s next meeting is at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7 in the proposed office location, a change from the usual meeting date and location.
Betts invited anyone interested to attend the meeting to get a look at the space before remodeling.
