Girl pinned by drywall, dies

An 8-year-old Tiffin girl died Monday morning after drywall sheets fell on her when she was looking for kittens in her grandmother’s garage.

About 10 a.m., Tiffin Police Department received a 911 call about an unresponsive girl at 136 Gail Lane. Seven drywall sheets that had been leaning against a garage wall fell on the girl, according to a release.

Chief Fred Stevens of Tiffin Police Department said a family member, Tiffin Police Department officers and a Tiffin Fire Rescue Division crew performed CPR on the girl, a second-grader at Krout 2-3 who was spending the day with family.

Tiffin Fire Rescue Division took the girl to Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital.

She later was pronounced dead. Her identity was not released Monday.

The police department’s criminal division was contacted. The initial investigation pointed to an apparent accident, the police department release states.

Lucas County Coroner’s Office is to conduct an autopsy, Stevens said.
