Around the Town wins award
COLUMBUS — Downtown Tiffin was given an award by Heritage Ohio Tuesday night in Columbus.
Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. Downtown Marketing Committee and Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Services received the “Best Main Street Committee Event” award for its annual Around the Town event.
According to a SIEDC release, the event introduces incoming Heidelberg and Tiffin university students to businesses and organizations in the community. For 20 years, the college campuses hosted the event, but in 2015, the chamber partnered with the marketing committee to bring the event to downtown.
Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz applauded the partnership between business, the universities and the community.
“Around the Town is a wonderful event bringing together the college students and the community,” he said. “It is great to see our community organizations working together and our commitment to the Main Street downtown approach is paying off.”
Tiffin became a Heritage Ohio Main Street Community in 2016, after two years of affiliate membership. The release states the program works on a four-point approach emphasizing organization, design, promotions and marketing and economic development in downtown revitalization.
Tiffin City Councilman Tyler Shuff, who manages the Laird Arcade building, said the event is a great way to introduce college students to downtown.
He said many students might be aware of where Westgate is, but he is glad the event gives them a chance to be exposed to some of the “mom-and-pop shops” downtown.
“It’s a great way to introduce the college students to what all we have to offer downtown,” Shuff said. “It’s a great thing.”
