Weather stymies travel

Icy conditions wreaked havoc on Seneca County Tuesday.

Wind and winter weather advisories had been issued through National Weather Service, and a Level 1 snow emergency was in effect in Seneca County from 5 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

A man was hurt when the tow truck he was driving struck a pole.

Seneca County Sheriff Bill Eckelberry said Jared Fleming, 22, of Tiffin, was driving a tow truck for First Avenue Towing and had responded to US 224, east of SR 19, for a vehicle in the ditch. The truck struck a utility pole, and American Electric Power was requested to check the pole.

Eckelberry said Fleming was transported to Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fleming, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was not cited, he said.

The truck was destroyed, he said.

The crash was reported at 8:10 a.m. Republic EMS, Scipio-Republic Fire Department and the county’s Echo unit responded, a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.

Bascom EMS, Kansas Volunteer Fire Department and the Echo unit responded to a sport utility vehicle that rolled on SR 12 at 3:37 a.m. No one was transported to a hospital, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said.

At 4:45 a.m., Ohio Department of Transportation reported a vehicle off the road near East US 224 and South CR 23.

About two hours later, a person reported a vehicle was on its side on North CR 11. A person denied being hurt, but help was needed with entrapment, a sheriff’s office report states.

Bascom EMS, Bettsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Echo unit responded.

An accident was reported at East US 224 and South SR 19 at 7:16 a.m.; a single-vehicle, non-injury accident on East CR 46 was reported at 7:57 a.m.; and another accident was reported on North CR 11 at 7:59 a.m.

About 8 a.m., a woman reported she went into a field east of West CR 592 and North TR 135 and was not hurt. About half an hour later, a person reported a vehicle was upside down west of West SR 12 and North CR 5.

A two-vehicle, non-injury accident was reported at West CR 592 and West TR 41 at 8:51 a.m.

A man advised a semi ran him off the road and he hit a tree on North SR 4 at 9:19 a.m. He was not hurt, the sheriff’s office report states.

About 12:30 p.m., a car struck a tree on West CR 26. No one was hurt, a report states.

Also, power lines were down at CR 591 and CR 14, and TR 36 and SR 635.

NBS Joint Fire District, NBS EMS District, Bascom EMS, Kansas Volunteer Fire Department and American Electric Power assisted.

A tree fell on a power line and knocked out power in the Bloomville area Tuesday evening.

A Seneca County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said North Central Electric Co-op power had been restored as of 11 p.m.

National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning Tuesday night.
