Teen flown after car rolls
BASCOM – A teenager was transported by Life Flight to Toledo after his vehicle rolled several times in Hopewell Township Friday evening.
Trooper Austin Young of the Fremont post of State Highway Patrol saidinjuries sustained by Austyn Ray, 17, of Fostoria, were serious, but he did not think they were life-threatening.
Ray first was taken to Mercy Tiffin Hospital and then was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
He was not listed in the hospital’s system Friday night, a spokeswoman said.
Young said Ray had been
northeast-bound on CR 26 in a 1994 Mercury Tracer and was going too fast for a curve. Ray over-corrected, went off the right side of the road and struck a culvert, which caused the vehicle to overturn. The vehicle overturned three times, went airborne as it rolled and came to rest in a ditch, he said.
Trooper Kyle Mayle said a witness stated Ray exited the vehicle through the passenger’s window. Young said he believed Ray was wearing a seatbelt.
No citations had been issued at the scene Friday evening, but Young said Ray probably would be cited with failure to control.
Young said it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Personnel from Bascom EMS, Bascom Joint Fire District, Seneca County’s Echo unit, Seneca County Sheriff’s Office and State Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
The accident was reported at 6:37 p.m., according to Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
