Conference to focus on guardianship programs for adults
MANSFIELD -The Ohio Guardianship Association is raising awareness about adult guardianship programs in Ohio by hosting a statewide conference, Trail Blazing for Core Guardianship Practices, Sept. 16 and 17.
The conference is to be at Mohican Lodge and Conference Center, 4700 Goon Road, Perrysville. The conference is open to social workers, attorneys, judges, legal professionals, nursing home staff, family members who are guardians, volunteer guardians and the general public.
“Our goal is to promote the highest quality of ethical services by guardians and guardianship programs through education, networking and advocacy,” said Nita Bring-Mazurek, Ohio Guardianship Association board president. “It’s an opportunity for attendees to enhance their knowledge and skills about the guardianship process, learn about new programs and collaborate with others who do the same work throughout Ohio.”
Maria R. Schimer, general counsel for Northeast Ohio Medical University, is to be the main speaker. Her speech, “Legal and Ethical Considerations for Guardians,” is to teach participants how to identify and apply the ethical concepts of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and conflict of values to case scenarios.
Among other presentations are: “Dementia: A Conversation about Change, Ethical Issues and Diversity Challenges,” by Lynn Ritter, professional education coordinator of the Alzheimer Association of Northwest Ohio, and “Mental Health Court-Ordered Outpatient Treatment Law,” by Betsy Johnson, associate executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio. There also is to be a panel featuring judges from Logan, Richland, Delaware and Summit counties.
Brenda Starr-Jude, staff guardian for Catholic Charities and Ohio Guardianship Association board vice president, is to present closing remarks.
The registration deadline is Sept. 8.
The conference has been approved for various continuing education credits. For more information or to register, visit www.GuardianshipOhio.org.
