Hayes to present kids’ program

FREMONT – Children and parents can learn about the Underground Railroad and experiences of 19th-century slaves during the next session of the Hayes Presidential Center’s Second Saturdays R 4 Kids series sponsored by Heinz. The event takes place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Participants are not required to stay for the entire event.

As attendees explore “Ohio’s Link to the Underground Railroad,” they will take a simulated journey on the “railroad” and create a lantern like those used by abolitionists to guide slaves to freedom. Parents and children can work together on decoding lyrics to spirituals from the time period that contained hidden messages.

In addition, participants can write about their experiences in journals they create. The journals are a continuing part of Second Saturdays. At each session, new entries are written and at the conclusion of the nine-part series, participants have a remembrance to take home.

The cost to attend Second Saturdays R 4 Kids is $1 per child and $7.50 per adult, which includes admission to the museum and the Johnson’s Island Civil War Prison exhibit. Anyone with a Hayes Presidential Center membership at the $50 or more level can attend free. Call (419) 332-2081 to register.

Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues, Fremont. For more information or a calendar of special events, call (800) 998-7737 or visit www.rbhayes.org.
