Council to consider fund shift
Due to discrepancies of Tiffin’s birthday, Tiffin City Council members moved forward to transfer $10,000 allocated for the bicentennial celebration to the Shade Tree Fund during a Finance Committee meeting Monday.
Mayor Aaron Montz said after researching Tiffin’s birthday, he discovered the land was purchased in 1817, but the village did not exist until the mid-1820s. Tiffin did not become a city until the merger of the village and Fort Ball in the 1850s.
“My personal opinion is the bicentennial should be celebrated with the city’s birthday, not with just the first piece of land that was given away,” he said.
The committee agreed to have Law Director Brent Howard create legislation for council to vote on to move $10,000 from the bicentennial fun to the Shade Tree Fund for continued beautification of Frost Parkway and downtown.
Montz also is to meet with interested historical groups regarding the birthday of the city.
The committee also approved a proposal from MJ Brown Co. for roofing improvements and masonry work to the Tiffin Municipal Building.
Already, $34,700 has been appropriated and Public Works Superintendent Mike Hoffman requested an additional $10,000 for the project.
Montz said there were significant issues and the project would be a long-term fix. The company also would be providing a 10-year warranty on the work completed.
The committee also agreed to have Howard prepare legislation to provide an additional $122,600 for the hiring of two police officers and an additional $8,300 to increase wages for police dispatchers. The first reading of an ordinance to increase wages for dispatchers was read at Monday’s City Council meeting.
