How do we know the Bible is the inspired Word of God? The Bible itself claims to be inspired by God. Scientific discoveries continue to support biblical accounts. Historical accounts and archaeological findings have proven the Bible to be historically accurate. It has withstood the scrutiny of critics for thousands of years without ever being proven to contain error or contradiction.
However, I find fulfilled prophecies to be the most compelling evidence of divine inspiration. No one but God himself could possibly reveal the minute details of prophecy that have been fulfilled concerning individuals, cities and entire nations.
According to the law of compound probability, we can determine the odds of a prediction being fulfilled by taking 1/2 times itself for every detail in the prediction.
If I predict it is going to rain tomorrow, there is one chance out of two my prediction will come true. It will either rain or it will not rain.
For every detail that we add, we take 1/2 times itself. If I predict it will be colder than 60 degrees and rain tomorrow, there is one chance in four both of those details of my prediction will be fulfilled. It may be warmer than 60 degrees and rain. It may be colder than 60 degrees and not rain. It may be warmer than 60 degrees and not rain. Or it may be colder than 60 degrees and rain. 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4, so there is one chance in four both details of my prediction will be fulfilled.
The prophecies fulfilled by the first coming of Christ are mind boggling. He fulfilled 333 details of prophecy. The odds of someone fulfilling all those prophecies are 1/2 times itself 333 times, or one chance in 84 – with 97 zeroes after it.
The prophecies fulfilled by Christ’s first coming prove the Bible is true. They prove Jesus is who he claims to be, and that he is coming back to fulfill the rest of the prophecies concerning him.
Fulfilled prophecies are compelling evidence that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
