Area schools fall at Quiz Bowl match
Four local teams were eliminated during the first five rounds of the 2014 Ohio Academic Competition Northwest Regional Tournament Saturday at Calvert Catholic High School.
Calvert Catholic High School and Clyde High School were defeated in the round two leaving Hopewell-Loudon High School and Columbian High School to advance.
Hopewell-Loudon lost to Van Wert High School with a score of 19 to 44. Hopewell-Loudon advanced to regionals after defeating Columbian at the 2013-14 Seneca/Wyandot/Put-in-Bay/Sandusky Area High School Quiz Bowl tournament in December.
Columbian also competed against Findlay High School and lost 30 to 52. With double elimination, Columbian’s team also played against Van Wert and lost, 21 to 36.
“We are disappointed. We thought we would do better than what we did,” Columbian’s coach Len Donaldson said. “We have had positives this year though, with 15-4 wins. We are just going to take it as a lesson and come back next year better prepared for regionals.”
Donaldson said he and his team would like to thank Calvert for running and organizing the competition Saturday.
“The (community) should stay tuned to WNWO’s Academic Challenge over the summer, as the team will still be competing,” Donaldson said.
He said the team is to meet once a month over the summer to practice.
Team members competing Saturday from Columbian were Katie Repp, Hunter Stark, Nate Ramsdell, Robert Klepper, Dylan Knaplund, Samantha Shetterly, and Nathaniel Gilmer.
Hopewell-Loudon was represented by coach Theresa Lucius and team members Alex Beleny, Maria Faber, Colton Feathers, Kevin Fruth, Jarid Gelinas, Jenson Nutter, Anson Tran, and Michelle Wilfong.
Clyde was represented by coach Melissa Detwiler and team members DJ Stanley, Jonathan Lewis, Jackson Jelenic, Jacob Roach, Kevin Langenfelder, Tristen Pocock, Nathan Strudthoff, and Nolan Rosen.
