Treasurer to serve two school districts

OLD FORT – During a meeting Monday, the Old Fort School Board approved a contract allowing Treasurer Jaime Pearson to serve simultaneously as interim treasurer of Bettsville Local School District.

Effective immediately, Pearson is to serve in the absence of Roger Luhring, who was placed on paid administrative leave last month due to an ongoing investigation.

Pearson also announced Old Fort School District spent another fiscal year in a spending deficit. She said, however, that from this time last year, the district’s debt dropped significantly, from $321,855 to $187,718. Pearson is to meet with Ohio State Auditor Dave Yost Thursday.

Regarding the ongoing process of the forgiveness of Old Fort School District’s debt, Pearson said “We’re still working on that.” According to Board President Gary Cole, all information was sent to Ohio Sen. Dave Burke and said, “it’s out of our hands.” Pearson is to speak with Burke, R-Marysville, March 20 to discuss Old Fort’s debt.

The board approved a modified version of the school calendar proposed by Interim Superintendent Larry Hodge. According to Hodge, Old Fort students are to attend school the Monday and Tuesday following Easter and three more days before the end of the school year, in addition to three days added to the end of the school year.

In other news, the board:

Approved the retirement of music teacher Diane Stallings, who served the school for 25 years.

Announced that the school will be accepting bids for a food service company with which it will consider partnering.

Approved supplemental contracts for an accompanist and choreographer for the high school’s upcoming musical, “Footloose,” and an adviser for Old Fort’s sophomore class.

The board is to meet April 14.
