Jazz singer featured at 2 area concerts

FREMONT – Terra State Community College is bringing Mary McClendon, a jazz singer from Columbus, to northern Ohio for two weekend concerts.

At 8 p.m. Friday, the Sandusky State Theatre’s Jazz @ Eight series is to feature McClendon in a jazz club setting. Opening for McClendon is the Terra Jazz Ambassadors under the direction of Kris Burt.

Snacks and a cash bar are to be available.

Saturday, McClendon is to be at Terra State for a “concert and conversation” in conjunction with the college’s Jazz and American Music Series. She is to appear at 8 p.m. in another jazz club venue in the Recital Hall, Bordner Arts and Health Technologies Center (Building D), on Terra State’s campus.

Snacks and a cash bar are to be available.

A regular on the central Ohio jazz scene since the late 1970s, McClendon’s vocals and scat singing have made her an audience favorite. She has shared the stage with jazz artists including Benny Carter, Louie Bellson, Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison and Sarah Vaughan.

Having performed with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, McClendon continues to be a featured vocalist in club shows, concerts and private appearances.

In addition to singing, her resume performance credits also include acting, including roles in movies such as “The Jesse Owens Story.”
