Women organize meals to show firefighter appreciation
In light of the recent deaths of two Toledo firefighters, two local women have organized meals to be delivered to Tiffin Fire Rescue Division this week.
Deb Hilborn, who is organizing the delivery of meals alongside her friend, Shelly Consolo, said the pair came up with the idea following the deaths of Toledo firefighters Stephen A. Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31.
“Why should we wait until a tragedy happens?” Hilborn said. “We need to show appreciation each day.”
Hilborn said she and Consolo have firefighters in their families and by providing Tiffin Fire Rescue Division with warm meals Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it will show just how much they appreciate the risks firefighters take each day.
“It triggered something when that accident happened last week in Toledo,” she said. “That could have been my family.”
Hilborn and Consolo have been coordinating the logistics of the meals on Facebook, Hilborn said, and so far, between 20 and 25 people have volunteered to donate or make food. Hilborn said some of the items include chili, cookies, desserts and casseroles.
“We want to make it easy for them in case they do get called out in the middle of the meal,” Hilborn said.
Hilborn and Consolo will be delivering the meals to both fire stations on those days, Hilborn said.
Hilborn said she hopes to continue the delivery of meals to Tiffin Fire Rescue Division each year around Valentine’s Day. In the future, she’d also like to look into the possibility of extending the delivery of meals to local volunteer fire departments.
“To show them we love them and we appreciate what they do,” she said.
