Buckeye Central school board to issue closure of gun club

NEW WASHINGTON – The New Washington Gun Club, located at 7675 SR 4 in Bloomville, is to close due to action taken by the Buckeye Central Board of Education.

In a statement issued by the board, the club is on property owned by the board and is located just east of the schools’ athletic complex.

“The action is being taken under the advice of legal counsel and is due solely to a provision in the Ohio Revised Code that prohibits the discharge of a firearm at, in or into a school safety zone,” Board President Missy McDougal said in the statement.

A “school safety zone” is defined by the ORC as “a school, school building, school premises, school activity, and school bus.”

“The board thanks the members of the gun club for their cooperation and understanding in this matter,” McDougal said in the statement.

McDougal said the board is not making any other statements at this time. Representatives of the gun club were unavailable for comment.
