Fostoria substation exploded, burned

A substation in Fostoria exploded and caught fire Wednesday morning.

Fostoria Fire Chief Keith Loreno said firefighters received the report of the explosion and fire just before noon Wednesday.

The incident was initially reported to have happened at the city substation, but it was found to have occurred at the Autolite substation on North Main Street.

Loreno said one of the transformers blew and then caught insulation and wiring on fire. The fire burned a hole in the building that housed the transfer switches, he said.

Power briefly went out to neighboring buildings, Loreno said.

Firefighters are not sure what caused the explosion, he said. No injuries were reported.
