Republic man trapped under camper, rescued
A Republic man was transported to Mercy Tiffin Hospital late Saturday morning after he was trapped under a trailer that had fallen off its blocking.
According to Seneca County Deputy Denny Wilkinson, David Fretz, 72, of Republic, was attempting to put tires on a fifth-wheel camper Saturday morning at Clinton Lake Campground, 4990 E. TR 122. Wilkinson said a floor jack was under the axle of the camper, and when Fretz had difficulty putting on a tire, he crawled under the trailer to make adjustments.
While underneath the camper, Wilkinson said something shifted and the camper fell onto Fretz’s hip, trapping him beneath it.
Wilkinson said Clinton fire, Tiffin EMS and sheriff’s office personnel responded to the scene, and the Jaws of Life were used to free Fretz. Life Flight had temporarily been put on standby, he said, and was later disregarded.
Fretz was transported to Mercy Tiffin Hospital by Tiffin EMS, Wilkinson said, and was “talking to us” when he was taken from the scene.
Wilkinson said Fretz is a “lucky individual,” and the incident could have been life-threatening.
“Thank goodness he had some blocking (under the camper),” he said.
