Police ID woman killed in standoff

A woman who was shot and killed Wednesday evening during a standoff at Family Dollar in Willard has been identified.

According to a release from the Willard Police Department, Kim A. Kelley, 48, of New Washington, died after she was shot by 19-year-old Shawn Schuett at the store.

Schuett had entered the store around 5 p.m. and took two employees and a customer, a Tiffin woman, hostage.

After receiving several 911 calls, Willard police responded to the store along with other law enforcement agencies and Special Response Teams.

For about three hours, negotiators spoke with Schuett, who continued to hold the employees hostage, according to a release from the police department.

The Tiffin woman, JoAnn Sarver, was able to escape the store uninjured after convincing the gunman to let her go.

At about 8:10 p.m., one of the employees ran out the back of the store and said the gunman had just shot the other hostage. The special response team entered the building, where Kelley and Schuett were found on the floor with head wounds.

It was determined Schuett had shot Kelley before turning the gun on himself.

Schuett was pronounced dead at the scene and Kelley died shortly after at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

According to the release, the incident remains under investigation.
