Attorney requests competency exam

The attorney for a man facing nine felony sex-related charges asked for a competency exam and entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity on behalf of his client Thursday.

Attorney John Kahler, who represents Shawn E. Hunt, 39, submitted the plea in Seneca County Common Pleas Court Judge Steve Shuff’s courtroom Thursday morning.

Hunt was scheduled to appear for an arraignment Thursday, but the arraignment was postponed until the competency examination is complete, a court spokeswoman said.

Hunt was arrested last week in Arkansas after being indicted by a Seneca County grand jury on three counts of rape, three counts of sexual battery, two counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and one count of voyeurism. The incidents allegedly occurred in Seneca County in 2011 and 2012 and involved a minor.
