Sludge catches fire at Webster

A fire broke out inside a tank at Webster Industries Inc. Tuesday night, causing heavy smoke inside the factory.

Tiffin Fire Chief William Ennis said workers were performing maintenance on a large heat quench tank when a fire broke out inside it. Oil had been drained out of the tank, but residual fuel and sludge ignited.

Firefighters were dispatched to the factory, 325 Hall St., at 9:54 p.m. and left the scene around 11:15 p.m. The fire was a two-alarm fire, Ennis said.

“It took a little while to get the fire under control,” he said.

Ennis said the machine in which the fire ignited is damaged, but there was no structural damage to the building. No injuries were reported, he said.

Ennis said the factory, which produces industrial steel chains, continued to operate Tuesday night.
