Bettsville man dies after prison assault

A Bettsville man who was incarcerated at the Toledo Correctional Institution died Monday after being assaulted by another inmate Sunday.

Michael A. Dodson, 38, died at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after being transported there following a Sunday morning assault in a cell at the correctional facility, Lt. Anne Ralston of the State Highway Patrol said.

Ralston said Dodson’s cellmate allegedly assaulted him, but she did not know the extent of Dodson’s injuries or whether a weapon was used during the attack.

“He did receive very serious injuries,” Ralston said.

She was unsure whether the other inmate, whose name is not being released, was injured during the incident.

Ralston said the attack occurred at 10:25 a.m. Sunday and Dodson was listed in critical condition before dying Monday.

The case is being handled as a homicide and will be forwarded to the Lucas County prosecutor’s office before it goes to a grand jury. It remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol, Ralston said.

Dodson was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2010 after he was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated robbery in connection to the 2004 stabbing of Subway clerk Shanna Long and robbery of the Fostoria store.
