Second 5K, mile fun run in works

Tiffin Firefighters Local 322 will be hosting its second annual 5K and one-mile fun run at Hedges-Boyer Park Sept. 29.

The event, which kicks off at 2 p.m., will have 10 age groups, according to a release from Tiffin Firefighters Local 322.

This year, computerized chip timing has been added. The feature will be provided by the Toledo Roadrunners Club and will allow for race results to be posted almost instantly.

“My goal is to provide one of the premier 5k’s in this area. It provides a great opportunity to show off our park and city to participants, some driving over an hour to come to Tiffin,” Rob Chappell, president of Tiffin Firefighters Local 322, said in the release.

Last year, more than 260 people of all ages ran or walked in the 5k and more than 100 participated in the fun run. The event, which was combined with the pink fire department T-shirt sales, raised more than $9,750 for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Ohio State University.

According to the release, the course is a flat, out and back route which will begin in Hedges-Boyer Park, head down Coe Street to Jefferson Street and the turnaround, then go back into the park. Parking will be available at Hedges-Boyer Park.

Registration will be open through race day and is $25 for those registering after Sept. 16.

Participants will receive a short-sleeved tech shirt, a timing chip, runner’s bib and post-race snacks and water. Door prizes also will be given away.

For those who choose to register on race day, a shirt cannot be guaranteed but some extras will be available.

Check in will begin at noon Sunday with the one-mile Fun Run beginning at 2 p.m. and the 5k starting at 2:15 p.m.

Registration can be done online or by printing out the form at
