H-L school board to further discuss PSEO?options
BASCOM – Teacher Suzann Bodart addressed Hopewell-Loudon Board of Education members Wednesday night about post secondary educational options procedure at the school. Students taking one PSEO class may have one study hall at the school, but students with more than one PSEO class may have no study halls and must sign out and leave the facility. She said last year she had five or six students in her study hall and it presented no problems. She feels the board is trying to fix a wheel that’s not broken.
“What happens when a student leaves school? We don’t allow athletes to drive to sporting events or students to drive to Sentinel. They must ride the bus. Why are we allowing these students to drive home during the day?” she asked.
The conversation continued, led by board member Greg Siebenaller. He wanted to know why it is a problem with the students staying at the school. He is concerned about putting kids on the road with nowhere to go.
Nineteen students are taking PSEO classes with 12 of those affected by a new policy. It was noted that these students and their parents have signed an agreement on the new policy and they are to be treated as college students for accountability. Hopewell-Loudon is not responsible for transporting students to PSEO classes.
Board members are going to further discuss the issue.
Elementary Principal Jen Losey stated that students are adjusting to the new facility and expressed appreciation for air-conditioning especially with the recent temperatures.
Board member Mary Ruth Crandall asked Losey if teachers were feeling overwhelmed with the paperwork demand on them from the state instituting the Common Core curriculum. Losey said it is a trying time, but the Hopewell-Loudon team is to work together and help with assessments.
High School Principal Bill Dobbins said they are preparing for pre-tests. He said students are showing pride with the transition to the new facility and they have appreciated the new technology. He said a portion of the gymnasium bleachers is to have a designated student area following discussion of students standing in front of onlookers during Tuesday’s volleyball game.
Ginni Beaston, administrator of special projects, presented members with portions of the school’s safety plan. They have had fire drills in the new facility already and tornado drills also are planned. The county sheriff’s office, local fire department and Beaston have visited classrooms presenting scenarios of emergency situations and students’ responses. She is to finalize the safety plan for the system.
Members discussed the possibility of a time capsule at the former school that has not been located.
The meeting moved into executive session for discussion of personnel.
In other issues, the board:
Established a fund for OHSAA tournaments.
Approved the accepted amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and certified by the county auditor.
Approved the certified personnel for supplemental/extra duty positions for 2013-14.
Approved classified personnel for the 2013-14 school year.
Employed individuals on an as-needed basis to perform services for any OHSAA tournaments hosted by Hopewell-Loudon for the 2013-14 school year and pay them at the established rates.
Approved classified supplemental/extra duty personnel.
Accepted donations to the school system.
Approved the classified handbook and the student activity statement of purpose and budget for wrestling, football, cross country, girls’ basketball, track and the classes of 2016 and 2017
Approved the SCAT contract to transport special needs students.
Approved chaperones for sixth grade outdoor school.
Approved an addendum to the agreement with the Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Approved an amended contract with Fanning/Howey for additional locally funded initiatives and the gymnasium.
A workshop is set for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 and the board is to meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the conference room.
