Zoeller proposes new pact at airport
Commissioner Fred Zoeller suggested renegotiating the terms of the Seneca County Airport lease to save the county money during the county commissioners meeting Thursday.
Over the past five years, the county has paid about $250,000 on general upkeep of the airport. Zoeller said after discussion with the auditor that the funds were from the General Fund. The county also leases the land for $1 a year.
Board President Jeff Wagner said the county does not pay Tiffin Aire, the fixed-base operator who handles airport operations, and the county funds are used for airport upkeep. He compared it to Fostoria or other areas, which have to pay their FBOs.
“All we’re doing is keeping up the airport. We own the airport, so we have to keep up the airport,” Wagner said.
Zoeller said there was nothing wrong with the contract. He was suggesting the FBO pay for part of the airport upkeep.
After a discussion with the prosecutor, he said that if the board and the operators of the airport mutually agree to open up negotiations, they could rescind the current contract.
Commissioner Holly Stacy also said that if the county gave up the lease on the airport, the county would have to pay back grants received from the Federal Aviation Administration for owning and maintaining the airport.
Zoeller said the county would continue to own the airport.
“The operators we have at the Seneca County Airport are second to none in not only Northwest Ohio but the country,” Zoeller said. “We have one of the best FBOs in Ohio. I’m not faulting at all what they do.”
The board directed Zoeller to investigate the situation further.
At the quarterly meeting, Katie Klinefelter is to give information concerning bonds and the current bond rating.
The meeting is to be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Meadowbrook Park in Bascom.
