Prescription drug drop-off box installed

In an effort to curb prescription drug abuse, the Tiffin Police Department has installed a permanent prescription drug drop-off box in its lobby.

The purchase of the box was funded through a grant from the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators and was installed this week, Tiffin Police Chief Fred Stevens said.

By collecting old and unused medication, the police department hopes to put a dent in prescription drug abuse and crimes that may be driven by the abuse, Stevens said.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in prescription pill abuse,” he said. “That’s driving a lot of burglaries and thefts from vehicles.”

Stevens said, statistically, a large percentage of abusers obtain medication from family members’ medicine cabinets, not from a dealer.

“We’re trying to clear as many out as we can to get rid of them safely,” he said. “The safe way to do it is to have these drop boxes.”

Stevens said residents can drop off any unused or expired prescription medication, with the exception of liquids or syringes, 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Those dropping off medication can either scrape or peel off the bottle label or directly dump the pills into the box.

“We collect them all and then they’re then disposed of properly,” Stevens said.

Stevens said pet medication also is accepted and the box can serve as an amnesty box, as long as no liquids or syringes are dropped into it.
