Paving scam reported to police
Tiffin Police Department is warning those living in Tiffin and surrounding areas about a possible scam involving a paving company.
Police have received a report about a company approaching a local church offering to pave an area of the property. The company claimed to have “leftover” asphalt from a previous job and claimed it could do the work for a greatly reduced rate, according to the department’s Facebook page.
After paving the lot, the company presented the church with a substantially higher bill than what was expected and demanded payment immediately. The company employee was not able to provide proper information for tax paperwork, which the church required, and wanted a check written out in his own name.
The name of the paving company is being withheld until contact can be made with the contractor to positively identify both he and his company and question him about how he calculates his fees, according to the police department’s Facebook page.
It states it is recommended residents obtain positive identification, written quotes and signed contracts before entering into an agreement with a contractor.
