4 businesses fingered for illegal alcohol sales

Four area businesses recently failed alcohol compliance checks performed by the Ohio Investigative Unit, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

According to information from the Ohio Investigative Unit, CVS Pharmacy, 733 W. Market St., Hy-Miler, 247 S. Sandusky St., Circle K, 272 N. Sandusky St. and Hari Petroleum, 265 N. Washington St., did not pass the checks, which are done to ensure businesses are following alcohol distribution regulations.

If illegal purchases are made, agents re-enter the business, inform the clerk of the error, and issue a ticket. For employees who allow these transactions, a penalty of a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a fine of $1,000 or 6 months in jail, may be issued.

For checks done by the Toledo District Office, the businesses which illegally sold the alcohol also can be cited.

Businesses that passed the recent checks include Walmart, 2801 W. SR 18, Circle K, 806 W. Market St., Kroger, 790 W. Market St., Al’s Convenience Store, 614 W. Market St., Rite-Aid, 530 W. Market St., and Speedway, 243 N. Sandusky St.

A spokeswoman from the Ohio Investigative Unit said the checks are done randomly. Many times, law enforcement request a certain business be checked, she said.

According to a release from Community Action for Reducing Substance Abuse of Seneca County, the organization is pleased with efforts of businesses in compliance. The community relies on permit holders to follow the laws to keep alcohol out of the hands of those younger than 21 years of age, the release states.

To help with this effort, CARSA and the Ohio Investigative Unit provide Alcohol Server Knowledge Training designed for liquor permit holders and their employees. Agents from the Ohio Investigative Unit provide instruction on laws pertaining to the sale and/or consumption of alcohol and tobacco. Agents also cover topics such as false identification, employment of minors and penalties for those found in violation.

A free training will be provided 6-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Frost Kalnow Room at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, 77 Jefferson St., Tiffin. For more information or to register, please contact agent Susan Baker at (419) 866-9908.
