Homestead applications due
Seneca County Auditor Julie Adkins encourages qualified homeowners to submit homestead applications for next year.
The filing deadline for this application period ends June 3.
The homestead exemption allows homeowners who are at least 65 years of age or totally and permanently disabled to withhold up to $25,000 of the market value of their home from property taxes.
Eligibility requires the property be considered a primary residence, and owners of manufactured homes also are eligible. The law allows for only one exemption per owner or home.
Property owners that met the qualifications last year and missed the 2012 filing deadline still may file a late application for tax year 2012. Once the late application is processed and approved, a refund check is to be issued for the exemption. The refund will be issued after State of Ohio approval during the fall of the year.
Continuing Homestead Exemption postcards were mailed in early January. These forms only need be returned if there has been a change in ownership, disability status, no longer primary residence or death of applicant.
