New Riegel replaces basketball coach
NEW RIEGEL – Following an hourlong executive session Monday evening, New Riegel school board members voted to award the 2013-14 varsity boys basketball coaching job to Dave Losey, who has served as the junior varsity coach.
Superintendent Elaine Nye said Losey had made board members aware he was interested in the head coaching job along with his teaching duties. If that was not possible, he would consider moving to another district. Since board members did not want to lose a good teacher, he was offered the position. He is replacing Todd Aichholz, who teaches in Tiffin’s school system.
Aichholz had coached the varsity team to at least a share of four consecutive MAL titles. He had recorded his 100th coaching victory this past season, his seventh as a head coach. His overall record was 114-42, and 62-12 in the MAL.
Before the vote was taken, board president Jennifer Theis stated, “We understand the accomplishments and contribution both Dave Losey and Todd Aichholz have made to the New Riegel School district. We have not taken this lightly. We had a good discussion.”
The vote was 3-2 with Theis and Jeff Hohman casting dissenting votes.
Nye noted that contract negotiations would commence soon with the teachers’ union.
Treasurer Jane Schalk reported on the district’s cafeteria fund. She noted that 5,100 fewer lunches were prepared this year. Having 23 fewer students contributes to that amount. She said the district is losing $.26 per meal and the board may have to consider raising lunch prices again. It was noted the district’s prices remain below federal guidelines.
She also told the board of the changes the Affordable Care Act will make in the system starting in 2014. Any entity with more than 50 employees must provide minimum essential insurance coverage. If an employee works 30 hours or more, they and their children must be provided coverage. If the employer chooses not to comply, the fine equals the total number of employees minus 30 times $2,000.
She stated that employees’ annual premiums cannot be more than 9.5 percent of their W-2 wages and the policy must pay 60 percent of the benefits. Non-compliance results in a $3,000 fine.
Principal Dave Rombach announced that Ebony Baynard would be competing in computers, Sarah Faber in cosmetology and Jacob Welly in building trades for State Skills USA Competition in Columbus. He said the prom is April 27 at Seneca Hills Golf Course.
Mary Reinhart reported that Jared Hohman won a trip to Washington, D.C., after receiving the North Central Electric Co-operative Annual Award.
Theis informed members that the Sandusky River League is formulating its by-laws and procedures for the 2014-15 school year. St. Wendelin has been accepted into the new league.
