Republic council welcomes Kevin Thompson as new member
REPUBLIC – The village gained a new councilman Monday night when Mayor Bruce Lambert swore in Kevin Thompson.
Thompson, an eight- year veteran of the Marine Corps, told council he has lived in Republic his entire life. He was introduced to council by Councilman Jeff Larick, who made the motion to accept Thompson. Thompson is a truck driver for Penske Logistics for Whirlpool in Clyde.
Fiscal officer Monique Delaney informed council she learned at the last state audit the village should not have funds or certificates of deposit for more than one year so money is not tied up long term. Council approved reinvestment of a 30-month CD coming up for renewal into a CD for one year or less.
Delaney also asked for approval of an ordinance which established permanent appropriations for this year. Council passed the ordinance as an emergency, waiving the three readings.
In her report, village administrator Crystal Hoepf said she received a call from Don Shawberry on Center Street regarding a large sinkhole in front of his residence where the sidewalk had sunk. Hoepf suspects there may be a broken tile and when the water recedes in the pipe she will use a camera to investigate.
Police chief Don Holmer reported the blockwatch program is intact and plans to meet in June and October. Holmer also presented council with a breakdown of his activities, including complaints and traffic stops handled, and said he plans to prepare a report for each council meeting.
Lambert suggested council should start implementing a pruning program for the electric utility. He said it would be up to council, but he believed the electric utility could stand the bulk of the cost of trimming with the balance coming from the General Fund. Councilman Joe Shawberry suggested other people be allowed to drop trees with permission to save money.
Councilwoman Debra Bogart called a meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday at the village hall to discuss the matter.
The next regular council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at village hall.
