Fire damages shop in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – A fire broke out Thursday night at McDermott’s Video & Ice Cream, 110 S. Sycamore Ave., causing fire damage to the store.

Sycamore Fire Chief Bryan Clouse said the fire, reported around 11:30 p.m., started in the ice cream shop on the first floor, and a woman living on the second and third floor apartment reported it after smelling smoke.

She and her daughter were able to exit the building. Clouse said the apartment did have working smoke detectors.

Clouse said when firefighters arrived at the scene, heavy smoke was coming from the building and flames from the first floor were going up the wall into the second floor.

Sycamore firefighters were assisted at the scene by McCutchenville, Upper Sandusky and Wyandot East fire departments, Clouse said. Firefighters were at the scene until 2 a.m.

Fire damage was contained to the first floor and smoke damage was reported throughout the building.

“It can definitely be repaired,” he said.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation, Clouse said.

No injuries were reported.
