Columbian student fares well at annual state exhibition
Sophomore Josh Briggs has become Columbian High School’s 56th state champion at the 2013 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition.
Briggs’ sculpture, “Mirror Man,” will be on display at the James Rhodes office tower in Columbus April 14 through May16.
The inspiration behind the “Mirror Man” stemmed from the song, “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson.
The sculpture took about a month and a half to complete, Briggs said. The piece is a 3D sculpture of a man covered in broken glass.
“It shows hard work, a form of dedication and willingness to do work,” Briggs said. “It is influenced by imagination and ideas that are created in real life.”
“The biggest concept about Josh’s work is the amount of work he put into it,” art teacher Robert Johnston said. “This piece is off the charts. To win you have to put the effort in and the work ethic and drive that Josh has is a key element.”
There was enormous competition, Briggs said: “To be honest I felt that
my piece looked like a third grader’s compared to the other pieces in the show.”
Columbian usually averages five students in the annual show, Johnston said.
