Jump in jobless number normal for January | Advertiser-Tribune Seneca County's unemployment rate rose from 4.9 percent in December to 6.1 percent in January, according to information from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in January 2015. An increase in the January unemployment rate is common, Angela Terez of Ohio's Department of Family Services said, as seasonal employees are laid off. "It's kind of apples to oranges to compare December to January," she said, adding a more appropriate point of comparison would be January 2015.
