Tiffin man’s company makes targets

After 10 years serving in the military, Jamie Chester has channeled his expertise and adventurous spirit to start a company that designs, produces and sells high-quality shooting targets, 3rd Rock Tactical.

The company’s website, 3rdrocktactical.com, states the company strives to provide “superior functioning products to the shooting enthusiast, law enforcement, and military personnel to create a safe, cost effective, and realistic training environment.”

Chester said his products are designed and manufactured with the highest quality standards, and are offered at reasonable prices.

The idea to start 3rd Rock Tactical, Chester said, began when he noticed a lack of steel target providers in the region. Most other companies that supply similar products, he said, are out West, and 3rd Rock Tactical is able to provide a more local presence and customer service that is closer to its customers.

Chester said the real start of the company was in the fall of 2013, when he traveled to the Louisville Gun Show to display and sell his products.

Since the start of 2014, he said, 3rd Rock Tactical has seen a “high volume” of interest in his targets. Business, he said, has been “gangbusters.”

Instead of running a retail location to showcase and sell his products, Chester said, he is relying on the company’s website, in addition to marketing at various gun shows and other events. In addition, he said, 3rd Rock Tactical distributed company postcards to a number of gun shows, shooting facilities with ranges, and law enforcement establishments to help generate sales leads and interest in the products sold by 3rd Rock.

Chester said he designs each steel target sold by his company, and sends those designs to be laser-cut using AR500 steel. He said his cousin, who is a welder, assembles the products, and coating is done by Arnold Machine in Tiffin.

Some 20 different types of steel targets are sold by 3rd Rock, Chester said, and new designs are in development “all the time.”

Shipments from 3rd Rock Tactical, he said, are by U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx, and larger orders are directly delivered, he said.

In addition to the steel targets available through 3rd Rock, other products available include a variety of paper and cardboard targets, target bases and other supplies.

According to the company’s website, the products offered by 3rd Rock Tactical “provide excellent functionality, durability and reactivity,” offering a competitive option for shooting supplies in northwest Ohio and surrounding regions.
