to host First Shots
Tiffin-Seneca Izaak Walton League is to host a First Shots program 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 7 at the club grounds, 3570 N. CR 33.
First Shots is a National Shooting Sports Foundation program designed to be an introduction about shooting and firearms ownership.
Izaak Walton hopes to provide a laid-back, low-stress approach to teaching people about handguns and gun safety one-on-one with a mentor/instructor. The day is to include a short class covering definitions of terms, handgun familiarity and federal and state laws.
The new shooters then are to move to the shooting range to experience shooting.
Registration is required by calling (419) 448-4882.
Hunters: Turkey map has errors
Hunters who are going to pursue turkeys this fall should be aware of an error in Publication 85, Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations 2013-14, regarding counties open for fall turkey hunting, according to the Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
The map on page 15 incorrectly shows Erie and Pickaway counties as being open to fall turkey hunting. Hunters should instead refer to the “open counties” section on page 14 because it correctly lists the 56 counties open to hunting this season.
The most current information regarding all hunting seasons can be found at www.wildohio.
ODNR adds online info for small woodlot owners
About 200,000 Ohioans own a small woodlot of 1-10 acres, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has added an online resource to assist this growing group of small-woodlot owners.
“Small woodlots are important because they support wildlife, clean the air and water, and provide renewable forest products,” said Robert Boyles, state forester and chief of the ODNR Division of Forestry.
This new online resource provides information on planting trees, enhancing woodland wildlife habitat, controlling non-native woodland insect pests and diseases, maintaining native woodland plants, protecting water quality, thinning woodlots, growing specialty forest products and providing woodland retreats.
