Biggest Week in American Birding May 4-13

When talking about spring birding, the Biggest Week in American Birding ( has become a focal point. In its ninth year, the Biggest Week focuses the attention of the world on northwest Ohio for 10 days in early May. Last year, more than 90,000 birders attended Biggest Week events to experience the songbird migration.

This year’s dates are May 4-13. Although registration is required to take part in many events, there also are many open to the public. One public event is the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. May 4 at Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center, 1750 State Park Road #2 Oregon, which features food, music, vendors and guest speakers.

The Biggest Week is centered at Maumee Bay, but its activities spread out to Black Swamp Bird Observatory, Pearson Metropark, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and, of course Magee Marsh, which is an internationally known birding destination.

The Biggest Week “summary schedule” is six pages long and includes several keynote speakers, workshops, beginning birding experiences — and lots and lots of birding in the field.
