Community dinner scheduled
Dozens of volunteers are spending their Christmas Eve preparing for the Community Christmas Day Dinner. It is set for 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday at Camden Falls Conference Center, 2460 S. SR 231. The dinner is free for people of all ages and situations who want to celebrate part of the day with others.
Michele, a N.O.A.H. (No One Alone or Hungry) Foundation volunteer, said Monday she has been handling reservations for three years. So far, more than 600 reservations have come in for the 2013 event. She said there is no deadline to register.
“I have actually taken calls on Christmas Day from people asking if they can still go. Of course, I say ‘yes’,” Michele said.
N.O.A.H. was founded in 2008 specifically to provide the Christmas Day dinner. With about 200 people served that year, the numbers increased to more than 650 people in 2012. The traditional dinner features turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, tossed salad, green beans, corn, rolls and a dessert bar with pies and other items. Volunteers will be on hand to prepare and serve the food and assist those who come to dine.
“I think we have around 145 volunteers. … They love to help at the event. I hear a lot of good things from them,” Michele said.
The number to call for reservations is (419) 455-4569. Callers should leave a message and Michele will call back to see if they have any questions or if they need a ride.
Even people who call on Christmas Day can arrange for transportation to the dinner. Michele said she relays the information to SCAT.
