Holiday Extravaganza to return Saturday
The annual Y-Wives Holiday Extravaganza is to take place Saturday with a featured jewelry artist.
Maureen Wise is the owner of Yz Creations, which offers steampunk jewelry and clocks.
Originally from Maine, Wise met her husband from Tiffin and decided to stay. She was born in a military family and spent three years in Turkey while as a teenager.
“I learned a lot during that time,” she said.
The steampunk term was coined in the 1980s, but was first developed in the 1800s. The movement aims to combine the feelings of romance and technology.
Wise creates her pieces by taking apart old watches from the 1920s which were made with rubies that allowed the metal gears to slide more smoothly.
Wise said she came up with the idea to create her own jewelry during an event in Columbus where she saw similar items, but was not happy with their makeup.
“I really just love to play,” she said of her creations. “It gives me something to do that I really enjoy.”
Wise said her items can be purchased at Joseph’s Clocks in Fremont and Simply Susan’s.
The event is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Tiffin YMCA, 180 Summit St. Parking is to be available at the YMCA and National Machinery lots. A free shuttle is to be available.
The event is to include crafts, a visit from Santa, free babysitting, door prizes, a luncheon and live radio broadcast.
Proceeds raised are to be used for YMCA programs and/or facilities.
