Egg roll planned at Hayes

FREMONT – Children 3 and older can participate in an historic re-enactment during the Hayes Presidential Center’s 2013 Hayes Easter Egg Roll.

Planned for 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, this family activity re-creates a White House tradition begun by 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes. In 1878, Hayes opened the White House lawn for use by neighborhood children after Congress enacted a law forbidding youngsters from playing on the grounds of the Capitol.

Admission is free; each participant is asked to bring three colored, hard-boiled eggs for use in the egg-rolling games modeled after those enjoyed by children in the 19th century. Prizes are to be awarded in four age groups.

In the event of inclement weather, the events will be cancelled; however, other activities will be conducted indoors.
